Summary
Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the laboratory director is responsible for compliance and oversight of the laboratory services, operations and staff, in accordance with the standards set forth by the practice and regulatory bodies which govern laboratory operations and safety. This includes Watson Clinic’s 7 laboratory sites which are College of American Pathologists (CAP) accredited.

The laboratory director has direct supervision of the laboratory manager. The laboratory director manages all employees of the department and is responsible for the performance management and hiring of the employees within the department. This position does require the ability to travel to other clinic locations to meet with staff and managers.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervision of daily, weekly, monthly laboratory processes, ensuring accuracy and quality control assurance within the laboratory and each location, including Point of Care (POC) testing and documentation;
  • Ensure that all laboratory facilities meet necessary compliance standards related to the laboratory or any associated regulations;
  • Responsible for maintaining and ensuring compliance with CLIA, OSHA, and HIPPA compliance regulations in the laboratory.
  • Proficiency testing and quality control standards are executed in a timely and accurate fashion;
  • Ensure preventive maintenance is complete and instrumentation receives proper care;
  • Verification of the test procedures per laboratory standards ensuring precision and accuracy of each test and system;
  • Review and further development of necessary policies and procedures, safety standards, and process improvement program;
  • Ensure staff maintain adherence to guidelines with regards to system or testing deviations and performance standards;
  • Ability to leverage LIS technology to create more efficient processes
  • Maintain and review error rates and institute corrective action plans as needed;
  • Ensure laboratory staff provide results that are reported in a timely and accurate manner, with priority placed on alert values;
  • Ensure appropriate management of laboratory inventory to maintain testing supplies and storage per manufacturer guidelines;
  • Indirect supervision of med techs and phlebotomy staff;
  • Developing core competency training, professional development, and quarterly assessments for all staff related to laboratory functions;
  • Supervision in coordination with the local management teams to ensure appropriate standards and documentation requirements are met, specific to collection procedures, shipping, and POC testing;
  • Evaluate and develop an up-to-date proforma to quantify the financial impact of current and future equipment or testing;
  • Assist in the evaluation of new equipment and/or testing;
  • Maximize use of technology to improve efficiencies in the laboratory and organization;
  • Manage ongoing relationships with reference laboratories, including but not limited to pricing, testing requirements, and service-related concerns as needed;
  • Demonstrate proficiency in operation of all equipment and providing coverage as needed.
Required Education and Experience
  • Medical Technologist degree or higher is required
  • State of Florida Clinic Laboratory Supervisor’s license in Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, and Serology
  • 8 years’ minimum experience in laboratory management
  • Experience with regulatory agencies such as CLIA, State of Florida, CAP, COLA, OSHA and AAAHC.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree in business or healthcare administration
  • Experience with SoftLab software
  • At least 5 years’ experience at the Director level in a healthcare laboratory setting.
